Downtown Houston, Texas: Tourist Attractions
Houston, Texas is named after the famous Sam Houston, the primary leader of the Texas Revolution. It is home to a population of 2.1 million, and the Greater Houston area, which includes Sugar Land and Baytown, boasts 4 million people. Houston is the largest city in the State of Texas, and fourth largest in the country.
It is also known for its booming economy, according to Forbes magazine, diverse ethnicity, and tourist attractions. This city also happens to be where I grew up!
The focus of this first post will be on attractions in downtown Houston, Texas.

Houston Zoo
I have been to the Houston Zoo a couple of times: once on a school trip, where I got to learn about and pet some various animals, and once as a regular visitor. The trip to downtown where the zoo is located is worth it to see all the animals and events the zoo has to offer. The zoo features animals from bears, birds, and primates, to a dinosaur exhibit and an African forest. Some ongoing and upcoming events at the Houston Zoo include:

Works of art stem from the early BCs to modern art of this era. Visitors can view thousands of paintings as well as furniture, pottery, and unique sculptures from around the world.

San Antonio, Texas
Our next destination on our tour of Texas is the city of San Antonio. San Antonio has always been one of my most favorite places to visit because of its many attractions and rich history.
The River Walk
The River Walk is a two-lane sidewalk that follows the San Antonio River. Restaurants and shops flank each side. Taking a stroll down the River Walk is enjoyable as well as riding the ferry. On the ferry you can learn about the history of the city and the buildings surrounding the river.
Some of the River Walk's annual events include:
The Alamo
The Alamo is San Antonio's biggest historic attraction. Visitors can tour the inside of the old Spanish mission and learn all about the Battle of the Alamo, it's heroes, weapons used, and important documents relating to the Alamo. There is also a gift shop as well as a visitor's center.
Great features of the Alamo include:

Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium
This definitely was by far the "oddest" place I've been to, in San Antonio or anywhere. Ripley's is full of things you never thought were possible, including things that people have done throughout time. The biggest attraction I remember seeing inside Ripley's is Louis Tussad's Wax Works. This wax museum features over 250 wax figures of famous celebrities. You'll be amazed at how real they look. I was! The museum also lets you make a wax hand for $5.
Ripley's Odditorium is home to 3 stories of exhibits which contain world breaking records.
For more on Ripley's, visit their site.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas
If you're looking for a theme park to go to, I highly recommend this one. When they say everything's bigger in Texas, Fiesta Texas confirms that statement. The park features four kinds of rides including thrill rides, kids rides, family rides, and a water park. My favorites include the Road Runner Express, one of the oldest wooden coasters still around, the Lone Star Lagoon, and The Gully Washer.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas also has entertainment for the whole family, including a Bugs Bunny show. If you plan to visit the park and stay in a hotel nearby, there are plenty to choose from.

GPS Navigators at a Discount
GPS navigators are really useful tools for driving, whether you're heading towards the next city on your road trip, or actually in the city trying to get around. However, most GPS devices cost upwards of $200. While the investment is definitely worth it, wouldn't it be great to buy a high quality one and still get a discount?
A really cool site I found which sells gadgets from A-Z is having a sale on all GPS car navigators. All GPSs are between 25-50% off. The difference in price stems from the size of the LCD monitor. However, all GPSs are touch-screen, tell you the names of the streets you are turning on, have an auto-correct feature if you make a wrong turn, and contain between 2GB and 4GB of memory.
The best thing is, you'll recieve free shipping and a 30-day money-back guarantee. For more information about these GPS devices, visit GadgetTown.com.

Great places to celebrate the 4th of July
Independence Day is just around the corner and our country will be celebrating 235 years of freedom. People will be going to parades, bar-be-queing, swimming, and seeing fireworks. But where are some of the best places to take advantage of all the celebrating that will be going on? Here are some cities that show true American pride in the land of the free and home of the brave:
Fort Collins, Colorado
Fort Collins is home to the Colorado State University Rams, as well as alumni and supporters alike. The city brings thousands of visitors each year to the many restaurants and shops that make the city's economy blossom. Every year on the Fourth of July, Fort Collins has events starting in the morning continuing through late night fireworks.

Bedford, Texas
If you're visiting the Dallas/Fort Worth area, this town features the best fireworks in all of north Texas. Not only that, but the city features an old-fashioned celebration that includes the Bigtop 4thFest carnival. The 4thFest carnival takes place at Bedford Boys Ranch Park. The Bedford's Splash Aquatic Center will be available to visitors and admission is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for children under 18, and free for toddlers 2 and under.

Cheap hotels through bookingbuddy
One of the best ways to find a travel deal is to compare rates of several companies with a customized search of exactly what you are looking for. A site I found that allows you to do this is called bookingbuddy.
When you go on, just pick what you need to book, and compare. You can search everything from hotels to flights, cruises, vacation packages, and cars. Comparison offers are made through major travel sites such as Expedia, Orbitz, Travelocity, and hotels.com. Choose however many and which ones you want to compare, and check the rates.
With summer in full swing, there are lots and lots of deals available. For example, there is a deal for a hotel in Las Vegas that starts at $47, and is a 4 star rating!

Austin, Texas: The Capitol
The city of Austin, Texas was named after Stephen Fuller Austin (1793-1836), a participant in the Texas Revolution, and known as the Father of Texas. He was a great leader and colonizer of Texas.
The capitol building, erected in 1888, is one of the "largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, D.C."(http://www.tspb.state.tx.us/spb/capitol/texcap.htm). The capitol won an architecture contest in 1888, and it's style is Renaissance Revival. It sits on one of the highest points in the city and above the Colorado River. The University of Texas at Austin is only 4 blocks away.

Surrounding the Capitol Building are 22 acres of historic monuments.
These include:
If you are interested in going inside the Capitol itself, self-guided tours are available during business hours. The Texas State Capitol is located at:

All about Texas: Did you know?
So, I'd like to start the tour of the country with Texas. Being my home state, I've come to love and appreciate all it has to offer. Before you go, here are some fun, and even useful, facts to gather:
Texas:
Texas:
- is the Lone Star State. It's flag features the "Lone Star" overlaying the vertical column. If you turn the flag upside down, the "blood will run." That's why the white is always on top, and the red on bottom. Texas is the only state that can fly its flag at the level of the American flag.
- in Spanish is Tejas, which means "friendly." Texas is true to this montra, as it is with its pride.
- people are friendly and courteous. Don't be suprised to see a gentleman open the door for you in a grocery store or gas station.
- has respectful drivers. If you are on the highway and are passing a vehicle on the left, the car you are passing may pull over onto the shoulder to let you pass. Where else do you see that?
- armadillos are "speed bumps."
- stop signs are Dairy Queens. A town is not a town without a DQ. So, stop for some ice cream on your trip, especially in a town called Buffalo, where they have a slide for the kids.
- features the famous Blue Bell ice cream. Definitely worth it.
- is the 3rd largest state, following Alaska and Hawaii.
- features mountains, deserts, prairies, plains, hills, beaches, and everything in between. Climates vary as much as the landscape does. It may be snowing in Amarillo, but in Brownsville, it's beachtime!

Welcome!
Hi, my name is Diane, and welcome to by blog. My love for travel began at the age of 7. My family and I would take road trips every summer, usually for 2-3 weeks at a time. I have visited many states, and the few I have not been to or through, I plan to travel to in the future.
However, in traveling, we always stayed within a budget. I still had the best time ever. So, my hope with this blog is to keep you informed on the best ways to do this, as well as add some fun anecdotes and games from my childhood.
Please feel free to add your own stories and tips from your life as well. Hopefully this will be a fun site where we can share our love of travel.
