Downtown Houston, Texas: Tourist Attractions
Houston, Texas is named after the famous Sam Houston, the primary leader of the Texas Revolution. It is home to a population of 2.1 million, and the Greater Houston area, which includes Sugar Land and Baytown, boasts 4 million people. Houston is the largest city in the State of Texas, and fourth largest in the country.
It is also known for its booming economy, according to Forbes magazine, diverse ethnicity, and tourist attractions. This city also happens to be where I grew up!
The focus of this first post will be on attractions in downtown Houston, Texas.
Tourist attractions
Houston Zoo
I have been to the Houston Zoo a couple of times: once on a school trip, where I got to learn about and pet some various animals, and once as a regular visitor. The trip to downtown where the zoo is located is worth it to see all the animals and events the zoo has to offer. The zoo features animals from bears, birds, and primates, to a dinosaur exhibit and an African forest. Some ongoing and upcoming events at the Houston Zoo include:

Houston Museum of Natural Science The Houston Museum of Natural Science takes you through a tour of all things natural and even back in time. Exhibits include the Planetarium, The Butterfly Center, IMAX theater, Paleontology, Gems and Minerals, Energy Hall, Gem Vault, The Americas, African Wildlife, Chemistry, and more. - Houston Museum of Fine Arts
- This is a great museum to visit if you are looking to see a wide array of artistic styles embedded within paintings and sculptures. I distinctly remember coming here on a field trip and it opened my eyes into the world of art.
Works of art stem from the early BCs to modern art of this era. Visitors can view thousands of paintings as well as furniture, pottery, and unique sculptures from around the world.
The museum is complemented by a library, a movie theater, a cafe, a visitors center, two art schools, a sculpture garden, two house museums, and two gift shops.

San Antonio, Texas
Our next destination on our tour of Texas is the city of San Antonio. San Antonio has always been one of my most favorite places to visit because of its many attractions and rich history.
The River Walk
The River Walk is a two-lane sidewalk that follows the San Antonio River. Restaurants and shops flank each side. Taking a stroll down the River Walk is enjoyable as well as riding the ferry. On the ferry you can learn about the history of the city and the buildings surrounding the river.

The Alamo
The Alamo is San Antonio's biggest historic attraction. Visitors can tour the inside of the old Spanish mission and learn all about the Battle of the Alamo, it's heroes, weapons used, and important documents relating to the Alamo. There is also a gift shop as well as a visitor's center.

Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium
This definitely was by far the "oddest" place I've been to, in San Antonio or anywhere. Ripley's is full of things you never thought were possible, including things that people have done throughout time. The biggest attraction I remember seeing inside Ripley's is Louis Tussad's Wax Works. This wax museum features over 250 wax figures of famous celebrities. You'll be amazed at how real they look. I was! The museum also lets you make a wax hand for $5.
Ripley's Odditorium is home to 3 stories of exhibits which contain world breaking records.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas
If you're looking for a theme park to go to, I highly recommend this one. When they say everything's bigger in Texas, Fiesta Texas confirms that statement. The park features four kinds of rides including thrill rides, kids rides, family rides, and a water park. My favorites include the Road Runner Express, one of the oldest wooden coasters still around, the Lone Star Lagoon, and The Gully Washer.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas also has entertainment for the whole family, including a Bugs Bunny show. If you plan to visit the park and stay in a hotel nearby, there are plenty to choose from.

Great places to celebrate the 4th of July
Independence Day is just around the corner and our country will be celebrating 235 years of freedom. People will be going to parades, bar-be-queing, swimming, and seeing fireworks. But where are some of the best places to take advantage of all the celebrating that will be going on? Here are some cities that show true American pride in the land of the free and home of the brave:
Fort Collins, Colorado
Fort Collins is home to the Colorado State University Rams, as well as alumni and supporters alike. The city brings thousands of visitors each year to the many restaurants and shops that make the city's economy blossom. Every year on the Fourth of July, Fort Collins has events starting in the morning continuing through late night fireworks.

Bedford, Texas
If you're visiting the Dallas/Fort Worth area, this town features the best fireworks in all of north Texas. Not only that, but the city features an old-fashioned celebration that includes the Bigtop 4thFest carnival. The 4thFest carnival takes place at Bedford Boys Ranch Park. The Bedford's Splash Aquatic Center will be available to visitors and admission is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for children under 18, and free for toddlers 2 and under.
